This afternoon I was napping with a bad headcold when I was jerked awake by a fat woman in a white shirt opening my screen door and walking into my damn apartment, because she was apparently too stupid to turn left instead of right, or to realize after standing there for five seconds that SHE WAS IN SOMEONE'S HOME. I said loudly, "Hey!" and half-attempted to lift my head (I was really groggy, this cold is terrible) and she backed out and I heard her talking to Brian in the alleyway, laughing about how she couldn't take ten steps without going the wrong way. Way to apologize to the B&B owner instead of me, you idiot, especially when it was perfectly obvious that you not only marched into my place but also woke me up.

Argh. I like keeping everything open for the fresh air -- my side door is behind the security gate so it isn't like leaving it open to the public street -- but I obviously shouldn't do that anymore. I'm probably lucky that none of the B&B guests have wandered in here drunk at three in the morning.

Usually the B&B doesn't bother me but sometimes it really, really does. I hope my next apartment isn't so invasively close to the tourists.

Hi everyone,

So, I've been looking for an article I read about 6 years ago for the past two hours and have come up with nothing. I don't remember the title or the author(s?), but what I remember was that it started out comparing events from Japan, the Middle East, and France (I think it was France, at least) from one particular year in--I think, not entirely sure--the eight century. I think the main point of the article was a call to medievalists to consider other world events in the study of medieval history. It's a relatively recent article--published in the last 10-15 years. It was really interesting but it's driving me crazy that I can't seem to find it anywhere. I seem to remember that it was published in a reputable journal.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

I know that a lot of people are upset that Dollhouse is canceled, but I'm really not.

I like Joss, and usually I like his work. But something just felt wrong about Dollhouse to me from the start.

I think part of it was the way he said from the start that he didn't want the audience to feel clean about watching Dollhouse, and part of it was how so many fans kept saying that we needed to keep watching because eventually it would get better.

Dollhouse was a sow's ear. And no matter how hard you try, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. (Or, to use a harsher analogy, you can pretend to like sex with your boyfriend. But if he's selfish in bed, it's never going to be good, no matter how much you tell yourself it is.)

Yes, Fox did us wrong by canceling Firefly. And maybe they were trying to make up for that by giving Dollhouse a second season. But I'm not going to shed a tear over it's cancelation.

Title: Playing for Keeps Till the End of Time by Lacey McBain

Why this must be read: This is an example of what a good fusion should be. Lacey has brought the Supernatural characters into the Highlander 'verse, giving them roles that fit the Highlander world without losing what makes them Supernatural characters. While Dean is not a Hunter and Castiel is not an Angel, Lacey keeps them in character, using SPN characters for conflicts that are recognizably SPN conflicts even if they're cloaked in the Highlander mystique. Castiel takes over from Methos as the oldest Immortal who "watches" himself. Dean is a former Marine who is in town after the death of his brother Sam, a Watcher (though he's not aware of this.) He falls into the company of Castiel and through that, adventure and further drama unwinds. You don't really need to know anything about SPN in order to enjoy it, though it will probably enhance your enjoyment since you'll understand the various tensions between the characters, but Lacey does a pretty good job of making it enjoyable for fans of both series.

Why this must be read: I don't actually know much about X-files, not being a fan of the series, but this is one of the fics I read when I want a pick-me-up. This is the story where Methos and Alex both decide to give up on their respective crushes. With humor woven throughout, Methos and Alex show an understanding and recognition of each other before deciding to give up on their respective crushes and try for something real with one another.

Pairing: Methos/Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones

Why this must be read: A. Lanart's Mystery 'verse began as a way for Jack to learn how to be an immortal (lower case "i" intentionally.) and evolved into a complex universe that followed the Torchwood canon 'verse, with the addition of Methos. Unlike most fics that cross with Torchwood, Methos doesn't join Torchwood; instead, he visits periodically as friend and lover. It also turns out that Ianto used to be a Watcher, though is presumed dead at Canary Wharf - something that is tangentially important for one of the most sensual scenes in this. Pas de Trois is my favorite of the series and for something that is mostly a PWP, it also holds a lot more. This is the fic that starts the Ianto/Jack/Methos as lovers relationship. What is lovely about this, is the lovely complexity of emotion from all three. By this time, Jack has separate relationships with Methos and Ianto; the decision to add Ianto to the Jack/Methos relationship does not feel forced. You can read this without reading the rest of the 'verse, but the whole 'verse is well worth a read.
