[EDIT] 1145 - I have read Brokeback Mountain and a chunk of Wraith Squadron at this point, for the benefit of any late voters. BBM? Is *sad*.[/EDIT]

On a side, but related, note: I definitely need to acquire a book-related icon of some kind. I think getting Photoshop reinstalled on my computer (after the big harddrive meltdown a bunch of stuff never made it back, and I'm only starting to connect the lack of photoshop w/ my recent dirth of iconing. I *know*, I'm a little slow occasionally.)

Well, I'm up. And at work. Woke up at 625 convinced I'd overslept, then once I concluded I hadn't I rolled over and almost did oversleep. Then I was a nice person and fed the cats so they wouldn't wake everyone else, which made me late to work. Some days? You just can't win.

I finished The Wilding at 0015 and proceeded to have a hard time falling asleep afterward (My brain kept, of all things, running down SGA fic paths. I know. Not like there was anything to inspire it. I blame [info]norabombay. I blame her for a lot, I'll concede, this plot bunny at least is her fault.) I then slept the sleep of one who has absorbed too much data in too short a time. *Headdesk*

Oh, and is anyone else vaguely impressed that the windchill yesterday *day* was -11 F? I think that's reasonably good for Dec Wisconsin.

ETA: Umm, help? I just tried explaining to a 50 y/o co-worker, in all seriousness, w/ hand gestures and interpretive dance, why DOOM kicked ass as a movie. Urk?

I've concluded a few things this morning.

First and foremost? Caffeine makes me happy. In the chemical sense. As long as I have a moderate amount as opposed to OD-ing, in which case it can lead to migraine on occasion. It makes me generally laid back and happy and content and a touch energetic.

Second, if the internet vanished tomorrow I'd be ok with that. Now, I'd miss LJ and AIM because that's how I keep in contact w/ people from rather disparate regions of the globe (And because a few of you, you know whom you are, have incredibly funny senses of sarcasm), but I'd get by. I just like to *read*. I've rediscovered this over the last few weeks at work where I've been bringing in books instead of illicitly skimming the web.

Today was payday, and I blew more money than I should have going to B&N and buying The Wilding and BrokeBack Mountain and getting a small mocha and curling up in a big comfy chair for a few hours. And I have now come home and realized that I'm seriously torn between reading the novel and popping back to the fics I was reading last night/early this morning before heading out. This was what made me realize that I don't care *what* I'm reading, as long as it's of decent quality.

Well, that and that I'm a sucker for interesting world building ([info]norabombay? I really want to read your thoughts on functional economy in SGA/The Pegasus Galaxy.) It's why I loved In Conquest Born by CS Friedman so much, it built two complete cultures from opposite ends from the spectrum, looked at their psychological influences, etc. That's the kind of book I can't put down. Why isn't Earth History written in that kind of format? It'd make it a lot more interesting.

(ETA:It's also why I keep thinking I should be a lot more interested in BSG than I am, but BSG has never really delved into that side of itself so I guess that explains some of it (The "12 planets spun off from Earth at one point in time, how they evolved as they did and why, discuss" aspect). Example of one like that I like? Firefly For exactly that reason.)

Anyway, that's my random armchair babble for the day. Tonight begins a 4 day work blitz again. At least this time I have 3 or 4 books to keep me company.

Via the magic that is NetFlix, I've managed to get my hands on the first disc of SGA. I thought I'd throw up a few initial reactions since I had a chance to actually watch the two episodes (other than the pilot) that it contains today.

Thoughts on 'Hide & Seek' and '38 Minutes' )

Yeah. Just had to pop that up. Especially the bit about Kavanaugh. I have a strange craving for SGA smut now (NOT Kavanaugh based!! Eww! Eww!! *Reaches blindly for bleach*). No idea why. Also popped in at B&N today, have concluded it will make a good new hideout from the world for a while. Learned that the sequel to CS Friendman's In Conquest Born is not only out (I had no idea one was in the works), but in paperback. Read through a hundred pages of The Wilding today, will probably go back and just buy the book tomorrow. That should keep me occuppied at work on Saturday. May also pick up another book to read on Sunday. I feel like a geek.

I am also getting way too used to this limited caloric intake thing, tonight for dinner? I'm craving a salad. Shoot me now.

Fire & Ice: The US, Canada and the Myth of Converging Values

In short: Peace, Order, Good Government. 2 out of 3 ain't bad, eh?

(In other words, what I did with the last 2 hours: Actually finish the book. I was halfway through the appendices before I realized I was *in* the appendices. Good Book)

Spent last night down w/ [info]gryphons_lair and [info]fairestcat. Had a wonderful time, and I have been fully convinced that Buried on Sunday should never be watched w/out Margaritas. Strong ones. Oh, and I have the VHS from Slings & Arrows and will endeavor to have it AVI'd by next week. Just in time for next week's final ep. *Whee!!*

[info]gryphons_lair has been raving about this production of "MacBeth" she saw, encouraging me to see it, especially since it's going to tour in my region. I looked it up. It's playing 1 show on a Friday night. It's supposed to also be in Manitowoc sometime during the tour, but I haven't been able to find any info on the Manitowoc production so for right now it's a bunk. Grr.

I have signed up to help out w/ the Katrina database. For more info check the post in either [info]gryphons_lair or [info]commodorified's journals. My step-mum has decided she wants to watch S&A once I get my hands on Ep 4 and 6 (She won't watch until we have the whole thing. Don't ask me why.) I think it will be rather interesting watching her watch it, but one can never complain about a PG marathon.

Oh, and on the way home I went to The Frugal Muse w/ my 2 above named compatriots. Here Are my $11.00 worth of spoils )

*Self-satisfied grin* I did good.

...I am most of the way through Fire & Ice, which [info]caras_galadhon got me as an early B-Day present (Well, and just because she's a generally wonderful person *Hugs*).

I have concluded a few things. First off, I am *very* happy not to be living in the DC area anymore. 46.4 per 100K murder rate in 2001. Ouch.

Also? Michael Adams really likes the phrase "Peace, Order, and Good Government". And not just because he's Canadian.
